Over 20 teachers in Vilnius are ready to help you learn Lithuanian, with the Vilnius City Municipality providing classrooms in schools throughout the city.
You can choose group or individual courses in English–Lithuanian or Russian–Lithuanian. Teachers will adapt to your goals – helping you improve your language skills or prepare for a Lithuanian language exam.
Course fees are agreed individually. After you register, a teacher will contact you to discuss the learning method and frequency of lessons. Designed for adults.

Free courses at Vytautas Magnus University

For non-EU citizens in Vilnius
75 academic hours + certificate of completion
Limited spots available
The Vilnius City Municipality, in collaboration with Vytautas Magnus University, is already offering free Lithuanian language courses at A1–B2 levels in-person or online.
These 75-hour courses, available in-person or online, are only for non-EU citizens and stateless persons living in Vilnius with a valid Lithuanian residence permit.
Upon completing the course, participants gain not only knowledge and skills but also receive an academic certificate with ECTS credits.
The first and second stages of the course are already underway. Registration for the third stage, open to new participants, will start in November. Places are limited.
All candidates will be informed of the selection results by July 10.

Practical and interactive exercises
A free online Lithuanian language learning tool designed for Ukrainians who want to start learning Lithuanian on their own or improve their existing knowledge. Explanations are provided in Ukrainian, and exercises are graded automatically, making it very easy to get started.
The online course consists of 10 modules. Each module includes audio recordings, exercises, and texts with illustrations, comics, and a "Did You Know?" section that provides insights into Lithuanian lifestyle, traditions, customs, and habits.

The Vilnius City Municipality, in collaboration with a language school, is launching free academic A1–B1 level Lithuanian online courses, funded by the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund.
These 60-hour courses, available online, are only for non-EU citizens and stateless persons living in Vilnius with a valid Lithuanian residence permit. Courses will be conducted in English–Lithuanian and Russian–Lithuanian.

Language clubs are not only an engaging and modern way to learn a language informally, but also a place to meet, socialize, and build connections. Participants with similar language levels are invited to meet regularly and speak Lithuanian on a variety of topics, helping them strengthen their skills more effectively.
Language Caffe in Vilnius will launch this fall. These clubs are only for non-EU citizens and stateless persons living in Vilnius with a valid Lithuanian residence permit.

Lithuanian language proficiency assessment

Foreign-born residents planning to live and work in Lithuania may, in certain cases, be required to take a Lithuanian language exam to assess their language proficiency. For more information, click here.

Why should you take the Lithuanian language exam?

  • It will be easier to join city life and feel part of the community
  • Everyday life becomes simpler: communicating, using services, handling official matters
  • More opportunities open up: work, career, and, if needed, citizenship

What does the exam consist of?

  • Listening – Tests your ability to understand Lithuanian in dialogues or everyday situations (e.g., in a shop or on public transport).
  • Reading – Assesses your ability to understand simple texts, announcements, or everyday information.
  • Writing – May require writing a short message, letter, or filling out basic information.
  • Speaking – A conversation with an examiner, evaluating your ability to communicate clearly in everyday situations.

Where can you take the exam?

  • You can take the exam at the local school in your municipality, or choose other testing locations throughout the country.
