Mayor of Vilnius: ‘We support and stand together with France’
The mayor of Vilnius Remigijus Šimašius extends his deepest condolences to His Excellency Ambassador Philippe Jeantaud and strongly condemns the act of barbarism which struck Europe, France and the French holiday resort Nice as it celebrated the Bastille Day yesterday evening. It is reported that at least 84 people have died and more than 100 have been injured.
“Today, we stand together with the Niçois as well as all the people of France and Europe. This attack against France is an attack against all of us and against the values of the European Union. We must unite in giving a strong response against terrorism. We should be asking ourselves if we have done everything to prevent such attacks as well as to secure our freedoms, our beliefs and our humanity,” Remigijus Šimašius said.
In unity with everyone touched by this tragedy, the people of Vilnius send a strong message: only united we stand strong and can combat these difficulties. The monument of Three Crosses, that can be seen from many spots all around the city, will be illuminated in blue, white and red – the colours of the French flag. The monument of Three Crosses has always been a symbol of national identity and resistance.
