Christmas is coming – meet it in the Capital, Cathedral Square, next week!
This winter holiday season will be memorable to the residents and quests of the capital – Vilnius has prepared a great number of festal events and surprises that will be going on till January 8. The long-awaited 3D tale projection returns to the Christmas in the Capital events this year, the Christmas Design Square will be opened for the first time, while the favourite Christmas Train will run on a new unusual route. As usual, the Christmas Tree will be the first to open the event and bring the festive spirit into the air of Vilnius. As soon as November 26, each and everyone is invited to the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at the Cathedral Square.
Christmas begins in the heart of Vilnius
The most beautiful season holidays will start at the Cathedral Square. At 7 p.m. on November 26 Vilnius citizens and quests at the Cathedral Square are invited to light the major Christmas Tree in Lithuania. The ceremony will be followed by a concert for the whole family where Mantas Jankavičius, Merūnas Vitulskis, Linas Adomaitis, Girmantė Vaitkutė, Jurgis Brūzga and Sasha Song will present the guests with their songs.
The Cathedral Square visitors are traditionally expected at the renewed Christmas Town. This year it will host nearly fifty decorated wooden houses. These will serve not only for Christmas shopping but for looking around, meeting friends and relatives and trying Christmas treats as well. The Christmas Town by the major city Tree will be open from November 26 to December 29.
The Christmas Train running in the centre of Vilnius from November 26 to January 8 is the much anticipated part of the Christmas in the Capital event program. For the first time in the history of the Christmas in the Capital event during almost one hour trip the Train will take you to the Bernardinai Garden with a carousel and other entertainment for the whole family. This year the main stop of the Christmas Train will be in front of the Cathedral Square at Šventaragis Street, near Odminių Square.
New in the Christmas in the Capital
The Christmas Design Square is also a new event in the holiday program. It will be waiting for visitors at the Vincas Kudirka Square from December 15 to December 23. Almost half a hundred Lithuanian designers and authors will present their works in this cosy space. The Christmas Design Square is a perfect place to visit for those looking for exclusive and original Christmas gifts and appreciating works of young Lithuanian designers.
Another good news in the Christmas in the Capital 2016 programme is a long-awaited return of the 3D tale. From December 25 to December 29 three times a night visitors of the Cathedral Square will be enchanted by the 3D Christmas story Sofia’s Star Map developed specially for this year Christmas. The fantasy story will involve the audience in a whirl of adventures, and the whole Vilnius will be enchanted by the magic of the story.
The Christmas spirit will also spread in the Town Hall Square. A traditional 14th International Christmas Charity Bazaar will be held there on December 3. Handicrafts and souvenirs made by employees of the foreign embassies residing in Lithuania and non-governmental organizations will be available here. Money raised here will aid welfare organizations taking care of preteens, youth and seniors.
Christmas – holiday for sports
On December 18 the most loyal sports fans will be invited to the traditional Christmas run. Participants of the 41st Eurovaistinė Christmas run will have to overcome the winter cold and will compete in 12, 6 or 3 kilometres distance, while the youngest will test themselves in a 200 metres run.
Farewell to the holidays
A traditional event Farewell, the Christmas Tree will invite to the Vilnius Teachers House to bid farewell to undecorated trees on January 6. As usual, starting from the Aušros Gates participants will be escorted by the Three Kings.
