During quarantine, residents of Vilnius order from libraries more than 300 books per day
Delivery of library books directly to your home in Vilnius has become a very popular quarantine entertainment – residents of Vilnius liked the new service so much that they ordered more than 300 books to be sent to their homes in the first five hours of the opening of the service. Librarians have to move quickly and to deliver orders to readers in the specifically created routes. Those, who long for library books, can order them once a week. The service is especially popular among seniors.
Residents of Vilnius can order books in the electronic catalogue or by phone, and librarians deliver them to readers in a contactless way. The City took care that the service is safe and reliable, there is enough disinfectant fluid, protective gloves and masks.
Residents of the capital shared their joy of reading on social media, comparing this discovery with Christmas morning, recommending others to order this service as well. “We are very happy to see that we can brighten the daily lives of our visitors and encourage them to stay at home during this unusual period. On the first day of the service everyone from seniors, families with children and young people were ordering books – obviously everyone needs reading”, said Rima Gražienė, the Director of the library.
How does it work?
On Mondays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., customers can log in to the electronic catalogue or call the Vilnius Central Library by phone 8 5 275 5945 and the children’s library “Saulutė” by phone 8 5 273 0605 and order no more than 3 books (a memo on how to order books online is available here). Books are delivered on the remaining working days of the week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and they can be ordered once again after a week. Before delivering books, librarians contact service recipients in person by phone, and leave the books at their door upon arrival.
This service is available to readers registered at the Vilnius Central Library and its branches. In observance of the security standards, books cannot be returned during the pandemic, so the library urges visitors not to take books back to libraries and reminds that neither those, who order book delivery, nor those, who have picked up books before the quarantine, should worry about default interest or other penalties. However, it should be noted that books for home delivery are issued from the funds of the Vilnius Central Library (Žirmūnų g. 6) and the children’s library “Saulutė” (Žirmūnų g. 2), therefore they shall be returned to these particular libraries after the quarantine ends.
The Vilnius Central Library found various other creative solutions for remote service of its readers during the quarantine. Seniors use the service of book reading on the phone, talks with representatives from the film world are held on social networks, and there are virtual library meetings held for families, which have no analogues throughout the world.
