Vilnius’ message of support to Americans: the US flag is displayed on the Town Hall
Late yesterday evening, Vilnius showed its support for the American nation, who are fighting the severe consequences of the coronavirus pandemic, by displaying a video projection of the US flag on the Town Hall façade. COVID-19 has already claimed more than 92,000 victims in the USA, with as many as 1.58 million confirmed cases.
“It is symbolic that we have chosen specifically the Town Hall because its wall shows the message of an honorary citizen of Vilnius, US President George W. Bush—a commitment to work together—which is important to Lithuania. The coronavirus pandemic is a battle that we will undoubtedly win: we will overcome it together by supporting each other because our strength lies in unity and cooperation across borders. So Vilnius expresses its strong support for Americans: our thoughts are with you; stay strong,” said Remigijus Šimašius, Mayor of Vilnius.
Vilnius and the US have close connections: Washington Square is located in Vilnius, and the anniversary of the Welles Declaration is commemorated every year. In 2018, the 43rd president of the United States George Walker Bush became an honorary citizen of Vilnius, while Dennis Hastert, the 51st Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, was named an honorary citizen in 2001, and Ronald Reagan, the 40th president of the United States, became an honorary citizen in 1996. Many US businesses and start-ups are located in Lithuania.
